How Sick You Are?

Listen to this postSick leaves have been used and abused by workers depending on their health and employer’s firmness. The cost of sick leaves on the U. K. taxpayer is exceeding £11 billion due to different reasons. Work related stress is one of the contributing factors along with workers lifestyle and malingering. The sick leave issues are management concern and health and safety topic. Workers feel the need for sick leaves to revive their mental and physical health. The organization management considers sick leaves as wasted valuable assets. Worker’s lifestyle in workplace or outside affects his/her health. Sleep deprivation can cause fatigue and negative impact on health. Work related stress is because of apprehensions over job security and family finance. Malingering is workers laziness to the point of taking sick leave when not sick.

Workers sickness due to work environment or work stress is a natural phenomena, but workers misuse of such privilege intensifies the debate against general practitioners (medical doctors) issuing the sick leaves. A survey showed that 80% of the general practitioners did not want the responsibility of writing sick leaves. The general practitioners are generally busy on more important issues that force them to write the sick leave without careful consideration.

Many of us have different justifications for taking sick leave when they are not sick. We have to ask ourselves how do we feel if our employees, whom we pay their salaries from our pockets, used the same justifications for taking one or two days off. For example, if we have a driver or housekeeper that declare that they are sick today and they got the official sick leave from the doctor to prove it? And they make this announcement to you just before you leave to work! How would you fee? What would be your reaction if they repeat the sick leave once every week?

    I face this problem almost everyday as part of my job.People in general and not patients in specific feel that to take a sick leave is one of their rights,and your job as a doctor is to give them their rights regardless if they are sick or not.The worst part in the story when you consider a patient sick and deserve sick leave,he will continue asking for sick leaves even when he’s better.WHY????

    • You are right doctor, many of us find the sick leave as one of our rights. Keep doing the right thing and do not get influanced by them.

    معليش انا بكتب بالعربي
    اسمحلي اوجز العمليه بما اشوفه من وجهة نظري الخاصة وفهمي المتواضع ومن واقع تجربه سابقه
    كنت اروح للدكتور بالسابق و اعاني من نزلة برد او نزله معويه يعني الشغله ماتستاهل ان تاخذ عليها راحه مرضيه وصدقني الدكتور يدري انه العمليه ماتستاهل الاجازه بس تدري وين الخلل
    الخلل ياسيدي انه المريض اهو يفرض على الدكتور الاجازه المرضيه لا ويحدد اذا يبي يومين او ثلاث ايام وفي المقابل بعض الدكاتره يستسلم للمريض او المتمارض ويوافقه الراي لا واللي ادهى من هذا كله اذا المريض قال للدكتور ابي اجازه مرضيه قام الدكتور وقاله كم يوم عاوز اذا المساله دخلت من باب العرف والخلل مشترك مابين المريض والسواد الاعظم من الدكاتره الا مارحم ربي
    هذا ايجاز بسيط واسف على الاطاله والله المستعان

    • كلامك صحيح. المشكله كبيره ويعتبر بعض الاجازه المرضيه حق مكتسب وهذه المشكله موجوده حتي في الدول العربيه. لو كل شخص يفكر بنتائجها كان ما تمارس احد. وكلامك متوافق مع تعليق الدكتوره فوق وهي تشتكي من إلحاح المراجعين في طلب الاجازه

    من أمن العقوبة أساء الأدب
    و أمن العقوبة المقصود به ليس غياب العقوبة
    بل هو نسيان المخطئ لوجوب العقوبة عليه
    فينساها و ينسى ألمها فيستمر بالتالي في خطأه

    أتكلم عن العقوبة الإلهية الأخروية التي ننساها في غمرة انشغالنا بنعيم الدنيا
    لو علم المتمارض أن الله سيسأله عن ماله من أين اكتسبه و فيم أنفقه ، و استحضر ذلك المشهد
    فهل سيستمر ؟

    أما بالنسبة للعقوبة الوظيفية في الوطن العربي ، فقد انقرضت و ما عادت تخيف أحدا

    أتفق جدا مع السيد فهد والسيد وليد . شكرا . وبإختصار بالنسبه للغرب فالسبب يرجع إلي أزمة القيم . أما بالنسبه للوضع عندنا فسببه
    ١ أزمة قيم
    ٢ أزمة قوانين غير مطبقة
    ٣ أزمة عقيده غير واضحه ولا نقيه

    • نعم, فاننا نضع القوانين لردع التلاعب ومن ثم نتجاوزها او لا نطبقها؟ والواعز الديني غائب عن ضمائر الكثير

    • Thanks for your valuable comment. The employees are excused to take sick leaves when they are sick. the problem is the abuse of such privilege.
